No. 18 Men’s Tennis Starts ITA Kickoff Weekend Against Auburn

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 18 Texas A&M men’s tennis team stays in the Peach State to take on the Auburn Tigers Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at 10 a.m. as part of the 2024 ITA Kickoff Weekend.

The Aggies (2-0) are coming off their second win a row, defeating Georgia Southern, 6-1. A&M controlled the match early on and earned all three doubles victories and kept that spark going into singles play, where freshman Brayden Michna clinched the win in a three-set battle over his opponent. With a win, head coach Steve Denton will be at 350 for his career.

The ITA Kickoff Weekend is used to decide which teams will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which this year will be held at Columbia University and USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York Feb. 16-19.

“The road to the ITA National Indoors in New York later this month starts against Auburn this Saturday in Athens,” Denton said. “I know our guys are excited to play. Auburn is a well-coached veteran team, and we will need to be ready to compete against them. Hopefully, we can draw on our early season training and the matches we have played thus far to come out on top. We are looking forward to the challenge.”

The Maroon & White boast an advantageous lead in the all-time series with Auburn at 8-2. The last matchup took place in Aggieland where A&M beat the Tigers, 4-1. Auburns enter the match 2-0 with wins over Samford and Alabama State.

The Aggies will play either No. 19 Georgia or Louisiana on Monday, Jan. 29 to conclude the 2024 ITA Kickoff Weekend.
