UNC Women’s Tennis Wins ITA Kickoff Weekend, Advances to National Championships

The top-ranked UNC women’s tennis team earned wins against Oregon and Kentucky in Chapel Hill as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday and Saturday. Carolina has now punched its ticket to the ITA Indoor National Championships in Seattle next month.

Against the Ducks on Friday, the top-ranked doubles team of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty dominated in a 6-0 victory on Court No. 1, and Reilly Tran and Abbey Forbes weren’t far behind with a 6-2 victory on Court No. 3.

Scotty kept rolling in singles, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Forbes and Anika Yarlagadda added straight sets wins of their own to clinch the 4-0 victory for Carolina. Fiona Crawley, Reese Brantmeier and Thea Rabman each held commanding leads in their singles matches, which were left unfinished.

The Tar Heels were just as clinical the next day against Kentucky, winning easily in doubles again before finishing off the sweep in singles. Forbes, Rabman and Crawley each won in straight sets.

Carolina will now head to Seattle for the ITA National Indoor Championships, where the Tar Heels are the three-time defending champions. The championships start on Friday, February 9 and run through Monday, February 12. A full bracket for the eight-team event will be revealed at a later date.
