Tesla released its high fidelity park assist feature during its 2023 holiday update

A new video on YouTube (posted below) provides an in-depth look at Tesla’s High Fidelity Park Assist. Viewers can get a good look at the system’s ability to accurately visualize and interact with the car’s surroundings for improved parking assistance but also understand its weaknesses.

Urban traffic and limited parking spaces have made parking challenging, often leading to congestion and increased risk of accidents. Tesla’s High Fidelity Park Assist is not just about making parking easier; it’s about transforming it. Tesla is just cameras to create a 3D visualization of the car’s surroundings, enabling precision parking like never before.

Breakthrough Features of Tesla’s Park Assist

AI DRIVR notes the visual accuracy and the clear view of the surroundings. It vividly shows barriers, crosswalks, parking spots and more. It goes beyond objects that FSD could identify, and even for objects that can’t be identified, they are still displayed on screen in 3D. AI DRIVR also does a great job of pointing out some weaknesses in the current system and determining its accuracy.

Upcoming Improvements

As we know, Tesla is constantly improving, but the first version of this system shows where the following upgrades may further advance the technology. Future versions are expected to offer even more precision and more accurate visual representations. The video presenter suggests the system might even cover larger areas and shift away from gray tones by overlaying images on the 3D objects.

The feature is currently limited to vehicles without ultrasonic sensors (USS), but Tesla’s director of Autopilot already said that the feature will also come to vehicles with USS. However, it’s not clear whether the feature will be limited to vehicles equipped with Ryzen-powered infotainment systems (MCU 3).

Tesla’s improved Park Assist is also currently limited to lower speeds (below about 3 mph), however, this could be expanded as well. One day FSD visualizations could be completely based on this technology instead of relying on pre-made 3D models.

Accuracy and Limitations

The technology accurately renders objects like cones and curbs, but the presenter notes that the system’s accuracy diminishes with proximity to objects. Another area for improvement will be hardware and, obviously, the addition of a front bumper camera. Cars with front bumper cameras will benefit far more from this technology. However, there are no future retrofits, and only the newest production models are equipped with front cameras, such as the Cybertruck. The video notes that the system needs to improve in showing objects directly in front of the car.

Interestingly, the video shows the system performs much better backing into places. It’s likely due to that wide-angle camera. If you or your teenagers have gone through any driver’s training lately, you probably know that backing into spaces is recommended. It allows for a much safer departure from the space, and the new High Fidelity System is set up very well for that.

The High Fidelity Park Assist system represents a significant improvement in Tesla’s Park Assist. These vehicles were previously limited to Park Assist with questionable accuracy. Its ability to now accurately visualize surroundings in real-time offers a safer and more efficient parking experience. The system’s ongoing development promises continual improvements, potentially leading to more precise and reliable parking assistance than currently available with ultrasonic sensors. This technology sets a new standard in the evolution of Tesla’s Park Assist.

Model Y, Best Selling Vehicle in the World

Tesla Model Y is set to be crowned as the world’s best-selling vehicle for 2023. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time an electric vehicle has led global vehicle sales, dethroning traditional automotive giants.

According to preliminary data gathered by JATO Dynamics, the Model Y sold an impressive 1.23 million units in 2023, representing a substantial 64% increase from the previous year. This remarkable performance signifies Tesla’s growing dominance in the EV market, despite the company’s relatively recent establishment. It also fulfills a bold statement made by Elon Musk in 2021.

Dominating Key Markets

In the latest earnings call, Musk stated, “Model Y became the best-selling vehicle globally, as predicted. The best-selling vehicle of any kind, not just electric vehicles, with over 1.2 million units delivered.” Incredibly, that was the only mention of this incredible feat during the call.

The success of the Model Y was particularly pronounced in Europe and China, the two largest EV markets globally. In China, Tesla shipped over 456,000 units of the Model Y in 2023, showing a significant 45% increase from 2022. In Europe, the Model Y’s registrations exceeded those of well-established models like the Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208, and Volkswagen T-Roc, with over 255,000 units registered.

Competitive Pricing and Tesla’s Reputation

Its competitive pricing strategy was key to the Model Y’s success. In November 2023, the average retail price of the Model Y was 18% and 23% lower than the average EV cost in Germany and the US. This strategic pricing and Tesla’s reputation for reliability and competitiveness in the EV market have significantly fueled consumer demand.

The Model Y’s performance has considerably impacted Tesla’s overall sales, accounting for two-thirds of the automaker’s deliveries in 2023. This dominance underscores Tesla’s influence in shaping consumer preferences and the growing importance of EVs in the automotive sector.

The rise of the Model Y signifies a shift in the global vehicle rankings, with Toyota’s RAV4 and Corolla, which have consistently held top positions in recent years, being overtaken. Despite Toyota’s strong global presence and diverse offerings, its lack of pure electric options has limited its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving electric car market. That said, Toyota, Honda, and several others are ramping up EV SUV production, and Lucid is also teasing a Model Y competitor. They have a lot of work to do to dethrone the new king.

Next Gen Concept

Elon Musk provided intriguing details about Tesla’s highly anticipated next-generation vehicle, internally codenamed “Redwood.” Musk emphasized this vehicle’s impact, not just in its design but more significantly in its manufacturing process. The details came during the fourth quarter earnings call, and despite cautioning listeners that the call was not about future production, the CEO gave us a lot to talk about.

He stated, “This is a revolutionary manufacturing system significantly, far more advanced than any other automotive manufacturing system in the world by a significant margin.” Musk continued, “I am confident that once it is going, it will be head and shoulders above any other manufacturing technology that exists anywhere in the world. It’s next level.”

Production Timeline and Locations

Acknowledging his tendency for optimism, especially regarding timelines, Musk conveyed a realistic yet confident tone, “our current schedule shows that we will start production towards the end of 2025. So sometime in the second half. That’s just what our current schedule says. But there’s a lot of new technology like a tremendous amount of new revolutionary manufacturing technology here.”

The first manufacturing location for the “Redwood” will be Tesla’s Gigafactory and headquarters in Austin, Texas. The new platform was originally set for Mexico. Musk explained that moving locations was strategic, “The reason I wanted to put this new revolutionary manufacturing line at Giga Texas was because we need the engineers to be living on the line. This is not sort of off the shelf, just works type of thing. And it’s just a lot easier for Tesla engineering to live online if it’s in Austin versus elsewhere.” Following Austin, the second production site is planned in Mexico, with a third location outside North America being considered for identification by late this year or early next.

Musk delved into the complexities of Tesla’s manufacturing process for the upcoming next-generation vehicle, highlighting the challenges and innovations involved. Musk acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the manufacturing S-curve, noting, “So it’s always difficult to predict what that S-curve of manufacturing looks like. So it always starts off real slow, and then it grows exponentially.” He emphasized the difficulty in forecasting the intermediate stages of this curve and refrained from making specific predictions about unit volume for the upcoming year.

Tesla’s Next Growth Wave

Musk further explained the uniqueness of the manufacturing equipment required for the next-gen vehicle, stating, “There’s a lot of specialized machines that make the machine for a next-gen vehicle. So these are not machines you can just order from anyone. You have to design a machine that has never existed to build a car in a way that has never existed.” This innovative approach underlines Tesla’s commitment to redefining the manufacturing process. Musk emphasized the company’s focus on ensuring the successful execution of its next growth wave, driven by the next-gen vehicle, energy storage, full self-driving, and other projects. This strategy is a testament to Tesla’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology and manufacturing in the automotive industry.

Tesla’s CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, added context to the company’s growth trajectory. He indicated that Tesla is currently between two major growth waves: the first driven by the global expansion of Models 3 and Y, and the next anticipated to be initiated by the next-gen vehicle. Taneja highlighted that in 2024, volume growth will be lower as the team focuses on the launch of this new platform.
