TENNIS: Lions drop 5-1 decision at USM

SLU Tennis 2024

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s tennis team fell, 5-1, to Southern Miss in nonconference action Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

SLU (0-2) earned wins on the No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles courts, but it wasn’t enough to take down the host Golden Eagles (1-1).

“We played hard today,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “We had a lot of close games and sets that didn’t’ go our way due to our lack of experience. With more match time, we expect to win those key points, because there’s no quit in this group.”

In doubles play, the SLU duo of Bogi Csordas and Alba Perez handled the Southern Miss pair of Angelina Blinova and Malannia Vashkevich, 6-2. However, USM won on the top two doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Taisia Bolsova earned the Lions’ lone point when Zenn Lin retired in the opening set. USM earned straight-set wins on courts 1,3,5 and 6 to close out the win.

Southeastern opens its home schedule Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. match versus Jackson State at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
