Men’s tennis picks up doubleheader wins in first home games

Sounds of passion and celebration filled the air as the men’s tennis team (2-1) faced Southeastern Oklahoma State University in their second contest and emerged victorious, six games to one.

The Mavericks kept the momentum going from beating Prairie View A&M University 4-1 in their earlier home debut.

Sophomore Dante Teramo went down to the wire in his singles match, winning in three sets. Teramo spoke on how he wanted to perform well after a couple of tough losses.

“It was tough, I lost doubles with match point and then in the singles I had three match points and I lost it,” he said. “In my mind, I don’t want to lose too much with match point.”

Throughout the match, Teramo showed constant passion and intensity. He said that the intensity he shows during play has been helpful.

“When you put intensity you have more confidence in your shots, you find more space on the court,” Teramo said.

Junior Pedro Sasso impressed in his home debut, winning all five sets he completed in both singles and doubles competition.

Sasso joined the team this season after previously competing for South Carolina State University. In 2023, he was first-team all-conference.

“I think to start the season, It was a pretty good match. We were solid,” he said.

Sasso said he has confidence that the team will get better.

“I think the energy was pretty good and that’s the most important thing, we are naturally going to improve throughout the season,” Sasso said.

The Mavericks will return to action Friday when they travel to Louisiana to compete in the Cajun Tennis Classic.
