DEA Releases a Public Health Advisory About a Risky New Drug

On Monday, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration issued a public health alert regarding the hazards of Xylazine, a potent sedative permitted for veterinary use that has lately been discovered in high quantities of domestic fentanyl supplies. As much as 23 percent of the fentanyl powder and 7 percent of the fentanyl tablets recovered by the FBI in 2022 contained the substance, often known as tranq. “Xylazine makes fentanyl, the most lethal drug threat our country has ever experienced, even more lethal,” stated DEA Administrator Anne Melissa Milgram. According to the FDA, untreated “severe, necrotic skin ulcerations” caused by Xylazine can sometimes result in amputation if left untreated.
