RED SPRINGS – Junior center Monica Washington powered inside for 13 points and 9 rebounds to lead Red Springs to a 44-33 Southeastern Athletic Conference girls’ basketball victory over West Bladen Tuesday night.
Junior Nakira Hunt pumped in 11 points for the Lady Red Devils. Junior Rilee Sampson drained a pair of 3-point shots and totaled 8 points, and junior Cabanna Wilkins added 6 points and 6 rebounds.
Junior Holland Davis topped the West Bladen scoring with 11 points, and senior Kiera Lewis finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior Mallory Bryan contributed 6 points and 2 steals.
A pair of rebound baskets by Wilkins and 2 more baskets by Adrianna Locklear staked Red Springs to an early 10-0 lead. Davis swished a pair of free throws then nailed a 3-point shot from the corner. Sophomore Natalee Sykes flipped in a lay-up to pull West to within 12-7.
Five points from Washington and a Sampson 3-ball sparked Red Springs to a 24-13 halftime lead. Davis drove for a pair of lay-ups for West, and Bryan sank 2 free throws.
Davis tossed in another lay-up, and Lewis drilled in a 3-pointer and put back a rebound for West in the 3rd period, but 7 points from Hunt and 5 more from Sampson opened up a 40-20 lead for the home team.
Lewis dashed end-to-end for a lay-up then tacked on a free throw to start the final quarter. Bryan stole the ball and raced for a lay-up then sent an assist to Alina Chavez for a lay-up. Davis bombed in a corner 3-ball, and Bryan cashed in 2 free throws to close the gap to 42-32 with 2:51 left.
Hunt drove for a lay-up to half the spurt, and Davis converted a free throw for the final Lady Knight point.
West Bladen, now 0-5 in the SAC and 4-10 overall, will travel to Clinton Friday night.
