Shots fired after basketball sectionals at Beech Grove High School, teen arrested

BEECH GROVE, Ind. — A 17-year-old girl from Indianapolis was arrested Tuesday night after a shooting incident outside of Beech Grove High School.

No one was injured in the incident which occurred after a Girls Sectional basketball game.

Beech Grove police recovered a dozen shell casings, a 9mm handgun and the shooter’s clothing a little after 9 p.m.

Witnesses told police that more than one person was running through the parking lot just south of the high school spraying bullets as they went.

The shooter, clad in a black hoodie, then reportedly circled back around behind Hornet Elementary School and dropped the gun behind the dumpster where police found it.

In the parking lot, police found the teenager wearing a holster, claiming she was looking for a cell phone lost in the excitement and found next to the hoodie.

When the girl’s mother arrived, police said the woman advised her daughter to “keep her mouth shut” when questioned by officers.

The girl was taken to the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with Criminal Recklessness and Possession of a Firearm on School Property.

In response to the incident, Beech Grove City Schools Superintendent Laura Hammack issued the following statement:
