BAY SPRINGS, Miss. (WDAM) – The West Jasper School District is mourning the loss of a beloved teacher and basketball coach.
According to a statement issued by the school district on Wednesday, Coach Corey Mackey served the school community for the past 17 years.
The statement described Mackey as an inspirational leader on and off the basketball court. It also said he left an indelible mark on the lives of his students, colleagues and the entire school family.
The district said their thoughts and prayers go out to the coach’s family during this difficult time.
In the coming days, the district said it will work closely with the school community to provide resources and support for those who may need assistance in coping with the loss.
“Our focus is on coming together as a school family to remember and celebrate Coach Corey Mackey’s legacy of dedication, passion and positive influence,” read the statement.

Lamar County Coroner Blake Matherne said Mackey died at an area hospital of what appeared to be natural causes, but an autopsy will be performed.
At the time the statement was written, the district said it was not aware of any final arrangements.
