Power outage in Monticello delays start of IHSAA Class 3A girls basketball sectional


MONTICELLO, Ind. — Basketball fans from Twin Lakes, Benton Central, North Montgomery and Western received a different kind of blackout night Wednesday at Kent Adams Court.

A power outage occurred at 5:30 p.m. that shut off electricity to 1,620 Monticello residents and to the gymnasium at Twin Lakes High School, according to the Northern Indiana Public Service Company. It was eventually restored around 6:45 p.m. as school officials were debating whether to send everyone home.

Twin Lakes is hosting host the IHSAA Class 3A girls basketball sectional. It was set to play Benton Central at 6:30 p.m. followed by North Montgomery and Benton Central at 8 p.m.

NIPSCO officials did not say what caused the power outage. Large groups of players, parents and fans were huddled in the dark gymnasium awaiting power to be restored.

The outage affected players, including Benton Central senior leading scorer Sarah Gick.

“I definitely think it would throw us off for practice,” Gick said. “We’ll probably run a lot more.”
