‘Madu’: New Disney+ Film Chronicles the Hopes of a Young Nigerian Ballet Dancer

The trailer for Madu, a new documentary film from Disney+, debuted today. The film follows the story of Anthony Madu, a 12-year-old Nigerian child who became popular in 2020 after sharing a video of himself doing ballet in the rain.

The video piqued the interest of the Royal Ballet School in London, which awarded Madu a scholarship to study there.

The teaser shows Madu leaving his home in Lagos, Nigeria, to begin his education at the Royal Ballet School in London. He is depicted overcoming difficulties as he adjusts to a new culture and way of life. But he is also driven to succeed, and the teaser concludes with him performing onstage in a ballet production.

Matt Ogens and Joel “Kachi” Benson, Oscar-winning filmmakers, direct Madu. The film will launch on Disney+ on February 7, 2024.

The trailer has received good feedback, with many admiring Madu’s ability and determination. Some have also emphasised the significance of the film’s plot, which demonstrates that dreams may come true regardless of where you are from.

“This is such a beautiful and inspiring story,” one user remarked on Twitter. “I can’t wait to see the full film.”

“Madu is a role model for young people everywhere,” another user said. “He shows us that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.”

In addition to the trailer, Disney+ has released a featurette about the production of the film. The featurette has interviews with Madu, his family, and the filmmakers. It also offers a behind-the-scenes look at the difficulties and rewards of producing a documentary film.

The featurette is available for viewing on the Disney+ website and app.
