Benjamin Logan High School’s Art III and Portfolio students recently completed colorful artworks, carefully painted onto large pieces of plexiglass.
The colorful creations are beautifully displayed and permanently exhibited in the high school auditorium.
The works of art will have lighting behind them to give a stained gl (ass effect, allowing them to shine brilliantly in the auditorium space.
Dwayne Walk generously donated the plexiglass to the BLHS Art Department. Dennis Wells, the high school head custodian, meticulously installed the artwork.
The project was a collaboration with the visual arts department, Tri-M Music Honor Society students, the agricultural education department, and guest artist Richard Duarte Brown.
Mr. Brown is in a residency with high school visual arts instructor Jennifer Davis and her art students one day per week throughout the 23-24 school year.
The residency, funded by the Ohio Arts Council’s TeachArtsOhio grant, made this opportunity possible.
The TeachArtsOhio program brings schools and community organizations together with teaching artists to share engaging, personal, high-quality arts learning experiences.
Mrs. Davis is well known for her grant writing efforts to provide learners the opportunity to participate in a unique creative process, bridge groups from differing backgrounds, and develop fresh ways of learning through the arts.
Mrs. Davis stated, “I am always thankful for the support of the BL Administration, giving students opportunities to create permanent works of art for our school.”
The Tri-M students decided on themes for the eight artworks: choir, concert band, jazz band, show choir, theatre, unique instruments, set design, and marching band.
Agricultural education students assisted with cutting plexiglass and wood for the projects.
The following art students designed the amazing plexiglass creations Courtney Bowers, Lahna Cook, Taytum Daniels, Nora Elliott, Lauren Hemmelgarn, Izzy Henderson, Nadiya Powell, and Kamryn Ridge.
Lauren Hemmegarn, BLHS senior shared, “I think it’s pretty cool that we got to be a part of something that will be here for a long time. In a couple of years, people won’t know who I am, so it’s like my own lasting impact on the school. I loved incorporating art and music and making the auditorium more visually appealing.”
