There are some materials that simply scream comfort, and in all my years of working in the home decor space, the one that always manages to take my breath away is velvet. Not only does this chic material add softness to an otherwise more masculine room, but it looks beautiful in such a large number of hues, as well. Others might disagree, I think the best velvet couches are in the running for the best couch.
‘Velvet is such an underrated material, especially if you live in a home with kids or pets, says interior designer Emily Henderson. ‘The lack of loops in the weave prevents snagging from paws and nails. Also, because of the natural varying visual pile, stains are pretty easy to hide as well’.
From loungey sectionals to more formal dining room chairs, the world is your oyster when it comes to velvet furniture. I’ve found several of my favorite options in all sorts of colors, from bright pink to minimalist grays, so you can decorate your home in style.

There are a few ways to take care of your velvet furniture so that it doesn’t trap dirt or other pollutants. First, be sure to vacuum often, since velvet can be prone to collecting irritants. Second, if you ever need to clean a velvet couch, interior designer Emily Henderson recommends creating your own cleaning solution, instead of relying on a harsh chemical option that could damage the material.
‘In a small bowl, mix equal parts distilled water and white vinegar, and dampen a clean microfiber cloth with the cleaning solution,” she says. “Blot any stained areas gently, starting from the outside and working your way in, and continue blotting until the stain begins to lift’. Wipe clean with a dry cloth and allow the velvet to dry, in order to complete the process.
