Darshan Shetty, Head of Business Area, Architecture, and Networking at Continental Automotive India, shed light on the next level of connected tech during an interaction with ETAuto at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in New Delhi.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Shetty highlighted the rising prominence of telematics in India. With the advent of 5G technology, telematics is set to make significant strides in the automotive sector, paving the way for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication.

V2X, as Shetty describes, is the next big thing in connected vehicle technology. It envisions a future where cars communicate with each other, enhancing safety on the roads. An intriguing example he provides involves a scenario where vehicles can communicate during overtaking maneuvers, ensuring a safer driving experience by addressing blind spots.

However, he emphasized the need for robust infrastructure to support these advancements. The integration of 5G and the development of dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) are crucial elements for the successful implementation of V2X technology.

About the adoption of 5G, Shetty said the challenges and opportunities associated with choosing between cellular technology and DSRC. While Europe leans towards DSRC, the US and China mostly favor cellular technology. The decision-making process in India involves evaluating the infrastructure needs and considering factors like latency.

While Bluetooth technology is already in use, ultra-wideband offers enhanced reliability. With ultra-wideband, the potential for secure and accurate proximity-based access to vehicles becomes a reality, presenting a more advanced and reliable alternative to Bluetooth. The continuous innovation in connected vehicle technology, High-Performance Computers (HPCs) and the shift towards centralized, server-based architectures is leading towards a software-defined vehicle, akin to a mobile phone, indicates a future where vehicles receive regular updates, transforming the driving experience.

The focus on cybersecurity is an increasingly crucial aspect of connected vehicles. Shetty revealed that Continental Automotive ensures cybersecurity measures extend beyond the end of production, with a dedicated team addressing potential threats and continuously updating the system for even 15 years post-production.

In this era of technological evolution, the automobile industry is not merely scratching the surface but diving deep into a future where connectivity, safety, and innovation converge on the roads of tomorrow.
