‘John Wick’ Dominates the North American Box Office

“John Wick: Chapter 4”, a neo-noir action thriller from Lionsgate, opened this weekend in Los Angeles. Industry watcher Exhibitor Relations said Sunday that North American ticket sales were an impressive $73.5 million.

Analyst David A. Gross called it “a great start” and said that every Wick sequel has been better than the one before it.

Most reviews have been good. The Washington Post said, “Would that all action films were so well and cleanly choreographed,” but some reviewers thought that there were too many dead bodies (more than 100 in each John Wick movie) for their taste.

Director Chad Stahelski, who used to be a stuntman, did a lot of the choreography for “Chapter 4.” Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, and Laurence Fishburne also star with Keanu Reeves in this story about a hitman who fights a powerful international crime group.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” which was the top movie at the box office last weekend, made only $9.7 million and fell to second place. Variety called it “one of the worst turns for a modern superhero movie.” Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, and Adam Brody are in the DC/Warner Bros. movie.

“Scream VI,” which was made by Paramount and Spyglass Media, came in third with $8.4 million from Friday to Sunday. In the scary movie, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and Skeet Ulrich play the main roles.

“Creed III,” a boxing movie from United Artists, came in fourth with $8.37 million. Michael B. Jordan directs the movie and plays the main character. On Saturday, his co-star Jonathan Majors was arrested for allegedly hitting a woman during a fight with his girlfriend.

And “65,” a sci-fi thriller from Sony and Columbia Pictures, dropped one spot to fifth with $3.3 million. Adam Driver is the main character in a time-traveling story about dinosaurs and spaceships.
