SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) – The Sparks Police Department arrested a 19-year-old man on DUI, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and other charges after he led police on an hours-long pursuit.
Sunday afternoon, at around 2:00 p.m., an officer with SPD was in Reno when he found himself behind a car with a stolen license plate. Before the officer was able to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly through traffic.
The officer did not engage with the car, and instead notified the Reno Police Department of the car.
Then, at around 4:00 p.m., SPD received a call about a possible DUI at a gas station. The license plate and description of the car matched the car mentioned from the previous incident. The caller told police the driver and other car occupants were drinking alcohol as they were putting gas in their car. The caller followed the driver and told the police they had driven through a red light and were driving recklessly.
Officers with SPD then responded, finding the car on Vista and Baring Blvd. An officer attempted to stop the driver, who then fled at a high rate of speed, going through numerous stop signs, red lights, and nearly colliding with several cars. SPD officers then terminated pursuit of the driver.
SPD continued to get reports of the car as it traveled throughout Sparks at a high rate of speed.
The suspect driver then hit another car in the intersection of Pyramid Highway and Sparks Blvd, but continued driving north, despite having lost its front left tire.
The car then became disabled in a neighborhood east of Pyramid Highway. As officers arrived, the five occupants of the car all fled on foot before eventually being apprehended a short time later.
No injuries were reported throughout the entire incident.
The car’s driver was identified as 19-year-old Devin Lake. Police say the car had stolen license plates and was reported stolen.
Lake has been charged with the following:
- DUI-alcohol-1st offense
- Driver eluding and endangering person(s)
- Acts constituting aggressive driving
- Possession of a stolen motor vehicle
- Driving without valid driver’s license
- Obstructing a police officer
- Minor in consumption of alcohol
- Failure to stop at accident
The five other occupants of the car, who were not named but were all above the age of 18, were charged with failing to stop at a traffic incident, obstructing, and being a minor in possession of alcohol.
