MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A new program series at the Marquette Regional History Center (MRHC) hopes to connect seniors through various educational topics.
The Senior Support Series kicks off this Wednesday with its first event, Music as Medicine.
Upper Michigan Today takes its show on the road to the MRHC to learn about the creation of this event and how the museum connects the community through programs like it.
Executive Director Cris Osier says the museum typically runs 25-30 special programs/events yearly, which serve as one of the main funding source for the non-profit museum.
Museum Educator Betsy Rutz adds that the community is vital to the museum’s operations: both in keeping the doors open and by coming up with new program ideas.
Kevin Dorr, independent healthcare broker with Mapping Medicare, created the Senior Support Series based on a need he saw in the community.
The events are free and will happen quarterly.
The first event will feature a performance by the Superior String Alliance.
Violinist Dani Simandl says the performance will include a slideshow of historical photos from the Upper Peninsula and will engage audience members through conversation.
Dr. Theresa Camilli, a music therapist, will be present to guide activities and a conversation about music as medicine.
The Marquette Regional History Center is gearing up to turn over its Special Exhibit.
Upper Michigan Today takes a look at its current display, chronicling the history of cooperatives in the Upper Peninsula.
And lastly, a final reminder about how you can get involved with the Marquette Regional History Center and its events.
The Senior Support Series: Music as Medicine is this Wednesday, February 21 at 1:30 p.m. and is free to attend.
Four $25 gift cards to the Marquette Food Co-op will be given out as door prizes.
Complimentary coffee from Dead River Coffee will be available as well.
