One of my favorite covers Riley Green does.
He’s kept Billy Currington’s “Good Directions” in rotation with a medley that also includes Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” Toby Keith’s “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” and Alabama’s “Dixieland Delight,” along with a few others, at his live shows for quite some time now, and it never gets old.
Riley has the perfect, pure country voice for a song like this, and he did a fantastic acoustic cover for his CMT Campfire Sessions recently that I can’t get enough of.
Riley shares stripped-back, classic, 90’s, and early 2000’s country covers pretty often on his Instagram page, and I’ve always been partial to hearing him in that kind of setting. And obviously, it’s exactly what I love so much about this cover, in addition to some of the added instruments that give it a really full, yet beautifully simple, sound.
“Good Directions” was written by now-superstar Luke Bryan and Rachel Thibodeau and released in September of 2006 as the third and final single from Currington’s 2005 album Doin’ Somethin’ Right. It ultimately became his second #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, spending three weeks at that position.
It has since been certified 3× Platinum by the RIAA, and has remained a fan-favorite in Currington’s catalog for going on 20 years now… and honestly, I think it remains easily one of the best songs he’s recorded to this day.
There’s just somethin’ about Riley’s rendition, though… do yourself a favor and check it out:
