2023 set a record for car thefts in Syracuse; 2024 is starting out even worse


Syracuse, N.Y. — Last year was the worst ever for car thefts in Onondaga County: The number of stolen cars nearly doubled from 2022. But this year’s early data from Syracuse shows things are getting worse.

For the first five weeks of 2024, car thefts were up 71%, said Syracuse police Sgt. Colin Hillman, who oversees the city police intelligence.
