Linkin Park Is Teasing New Music

Linkin Park didn’t break up when lead singer Chester Bennington died in 2017, but they also haven’t been active since then, either. No official statement was ever really made from the hard rock group as to whether they’ll make music again, but it seems like those days may be over. As the members focus their creative efforts elsewhere, the band seems to be teasing a new track–or, more accurately, an old one that may finally see the light of day.

The band’s official X account (formerly Twitter) recently announced a tune titled “Friendly Fire.” The track is described by Linkin Park as, “a new, unreleased song from the One More Light 2017 sessions.” The post also came with a short snippet of the tune.

One More Light served as Linkin Park’s last album, though it wasn’t known at the time it was released that it would serve in that role. Bennington died by suicide just months after the full-length arrived, and since then, the band has been largely silent.

The fact that Linkin Park has a song to share is fascinating, and very exciting for longtime fans of the band, but some very important information was missing from their post. For now, there’s no word on when “Friendly Fire” will be released. It’s unlikely that the group would announce the cut if they didn’t have any intention of sharing it publicly, but for now, those details are being kept under wraps.

This isn’t the first time that Linkin Park fans have heard about “Friendly Fire” existing. Mike Shinoda, one of the members of the group, has mentioned it in the past, so those who follow the group very carefully are already familiar with the title—though this may be the first they’re hearing any bit of the cut.

While it’s been more than half a decade since Linkin Park last released an album, and they haven’t produced anything new since then, the band has doled out a few previously unreleased tunes in the past few years. They landed another Billboard chart hit in mid-2023 with “Lost,” which was added to the full-length Meteora when it was re-released to celebrate its twentieth anniversary. Before that, they also shared “She Couldn’t” from the twentieth-anniversary edition of their debut album Hybrid Theory back in 2020.
