CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Fox 8 I-Team has learned a top Cleveland City official is under investigation after getting into a crash while driving a City of Cleveland car with kids inside.
The car crash involved City of Cleveland Assistant Safety Director Jakimah Dye. It happened in Warrensville Heights on Saturday.
The I-Team went to City Hall to try and talk to Dye but was told she was not available. So they talked to her boss, Director of Public Safety Karrie Howard.
“The accident’s under investigation being reviewed,” Howard told the I-Team. “The policy’s being reviewed. But, she did everything she’s supposed to do.”
When I-Team Reporter Peggy Gallek asked why Dye had kids in the city vehicle, he said he didn’t realize that it was an issue.
“I’ve had my son in the car,” Howard said. “We reviewed the policy. I didn’t know there was a policy.”
The I-Team requested the city policy, which states employees shall not transport any person other than city employees. The safety director admitted he didn’t know that.
I-Team Reporter Ed Gallek asked Howard how he and Dye were not familiar with the policy.
“We have general police orders, officers don’t know all the police orders,” Howard said. “You have civil service rules. You have all these policies and sometimes the policies you become familiar with them by happenstance.”
Howard also said Dye crashed as she was about to go downtown to a promotional test for firefighters.
“She’s a mother,” Howard said. “So, she had kids in the car. She was dropping them off, so she can be the assistant director she’s supposed to be.”
Howard, however, also confirmed that Dye never ended up going to the promotional test. Dye is still on the job, but not driving a city car. The Mayor’s Office said Dye is not allowed to drive a city car during the investigation.
“There’s an internal investigation which will look into where she was going, why she was in the city vehicle at that location at that time,” City of Cleveland Communications Chief Sarah Johnson said. Warrensville Heights officials say it will be several days before the complete report will be available.
