Portland man gets 3 years for racially motivated assault of food cart owner

A man who pummelled a food cart owner while uttering racist slurs was sentenced Wednesday to three years in state prison.

Daniel T. Warren, 40, could face more time behind bars if he doesn’t complete two implicit bias classes led by the University of Oregon, receive drug treatment, perform 40 hours of community service at Union Gospel Mission in Portland, or a similar organization, and read a book about racism or white fragility, according to an attorney representing food cart owner Darell Preston.
