University podcast discusses Artificial Intelligence – University of Liverpool News

Artificial Intelligence is the topic of conversation in episode two of the University of Liverpool’s Original Ideas podcast series.

AI is transforming research in many different fields, and this episode focuses on how it is being utilised in Chemistry and Law research at Liverpool with host Gavin Freeborn talking to Professors Katie Atkinson and Andy Cooper, and early career researchers Dr Jack Mumford and Dr Gabriella Pizzuto.

The podcast follows the exciting announcement of the  £12 million AI for Chemistry Hub that Liverpool will be co-leading with Imperial College London. The new hub will bring together leading academic researchers, industry, and other stakeholders to create new approaches at the rapidly evolving AI-chemistry interface, and position the UK as the global leader in Digital Chemistry.

Professor Andy Cooper, Academic Director of the Materials Innovation Factory and Director of Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design Chemistry, tells us about his innovative work in robotics, AI and chemistry and how AI can be used positively to make advances in tackling global challenges such as clean energy solutions and improving access to clean water in developing countries.

Professor Katie Atkinson, Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, discusses her research on evolving sustainable, ethical paths forward for AI to be used in law, to assist with the major backlogs of cases worldwide. Katie explains how interdisciplinary research work between computer science and other areas such as chemistry and law, enriches research and real world impact.

Early career researchers Dr Jack Mumford, Research Associate in AI and Law and Dr Gabriella Pizzuto, Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow and Lecturer in Robotics and Chemistry Automation, discuss their experiences working with AI in their different research fields, including the benefits of interdisciplinary research collaboration and the nurturing environment at the University of Liverpool.
