YELLOWSTONE NATL. PARK – One of the most remarkable parts about experiencing Yellowstone National Park is all the amazing wildlife that’s been able to thrive within its boundaries.
Of the 2.2 million acres in Yellowstone National Park, less than 2000 acres of it is pavement – meaning this place is almost as natural as can be.
Because of that, people are able to connect these landscapes and wild animals in a way they may have never experienced before.
There’s no barrier or cage to contain them – so it’s important to respect the animals and keep your distance.
Shannan Marcak, a ranger with the National Park Service, says being aware of the animal’s presence and demeanor is important for your safety. Bison can jump 6 feet into the air and run up to 35 miles per hour – not an animal to take your chances with!
-
As a general rule you’re advised to stay at least 25 yards – or two bus lengths – away from bison and elk.
-
For bears and wolves – the recommendation stretches to 100 yards – or eight bus lengths away.
