Western student debuts solo exhibition The Waiting Room

The Waiting Room

Chloe Serenko, a fourth-year fine arts student at Western, is showcasing her debut solo exhibition The Waiting Room at Good Sport Art Gallery until March 2.

The exhibition is made up of mixed media — specifically vintage objects, paintings and sculpture. Serenko uses this combination to give the exhibit historical depth, while also giving viewers a peek into her personal life.

The solo exhibition marks a significant milestone in Serenko’s artistic journey — a milestone underscored by her early achievement of the Juror’s Choice Award in her first year of university, the accolade that ignited her passion for the fine arts.

Serenko sees her work as a therapeutic and expressive release that draws inspiration from introspection.

“I hope people can relate to it or get something out of it. I prefer to use my art as a way to express the multitude of emotions I have,” says Serenko.

The Waiting Room offers an intimate perspective into Serenko’s creative process as she navigates identity issues rooted in her Catholic upbringing and later conversion to paganism.

“In my second year, as I became more interested in sculpture, I began to create a lot of this kind of religious-type work,” says Serenko.

By combining religious symbolism with the complexities of human thought, the exhibition presents a unique meeting point of spirituality and humanity.

Reflecting on the sources of inspiration for the project, Serenko expresses interest in the persuasive tactics of the Catholic Church.

“I adore the Catholic Church’s propaganda-like aspects. I believe that the way the Bible is preached has a lot to do with it,” says Serenko. “Individuals tend to interpret the Bible in ways that suit their agendas.”

Beyond the show, Serenko hopes to pursue curating, working with local galleries and possibly teaching art.

The exhibition is open on Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Appointments can be arranged by being made to Good Sport Gallery through Instagram or email.
