With so much happening across fashion and beauty in Australia, it’s easy to miss some of the big moments. New collections, industry-changing initiatives, one-off archive sales – each week brings an influx of fresh industry news, and it’s our job at Fashion Journal to be across all of it. This week was especially busy with the launch of PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, introducing a stacked program of over 100 fashion-centric events.

eBay announced Dempstah as the winner of its 2024 Circular Fashion Fund
On February 22, eBay, with support from the Australian Fashion Council, announced Dempstah as the recipient of its 2024 Circular Fashion Fund. Founded by Sydneysider Guy Dempster, Dempstah is a design initiative that works with local and international mills to transform Australian textile waste into spun yarn. As the overall winner, Guy will receive $100,000, while runners-up Rcycl and The Very Good Bra have been awarded $50,000 each to put towards circular business solutions.

PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival kicked off an extended program of runways, workshops and panels
Back for its 28th year running, the PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival kicked off this week with a plethora of events celebrating fashion, arts and ideas. Running until March 9, the Festival lineup offers a curated selection of premium runways, independent events, panel talks, workshops and more. Soup Shop announced its next event, hosted at Saloon Store
Melbourne pop-up store series Soup Shop is hosting its next edition from March 15 to 17 at an FJ favourite, Saloon Store. As always, the event will offer a curated selection of pre-loved designer pieces, as well as a chef’s special soup to slurp after you shop. Expect pieces from labels like Moschino, Missoni, Comme des Garçons and Prada.

Nominations opened for the National Indigenous Fashion Awards 2024
This week, the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) announced nominations have opened for the annual National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFA). Held on Larrika Country every August, NIFA celebrates and pays recognition to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in fashion and textiles. The awards – ranging from the Wearable Art Award to the Business Achievement Award – are sponsored by a host of industry partners, including Country Road, RMIT and Canberra Centre. Nominate yourself or one of your favourite First Nations creatives!

Remember that bath scene from Saltburn? I know you do. This week, Lush Cosmetics launched its limited-edition ‘Saltbomb’, inspired by none other than Jacob Elordi’s milky bath water. Enriched with soothing minerals and coconut milk powder, it smells like the brand’s best-selling bubble bar Milky Bath but turns your bathwater into a salty, creamy concoction. Stunning.

Melbourne-based retailer Error404 is hosting its first-ever designer market, running from March 1 to 3. Expect new pieces, samples, one-off items and sale garments on offer, from a curated selection of independent designers.
