The characters in the film adaptation of the science fiction epic Dune may be on a quest for control of the elusive substance “spice,” but fashion-wise, here on Earth, one need look no further than star Zendaya’s red-carpet looks ahead of the release of Dune: Part Two to feel the heat.
Zendaya, who returns to the sequel to reprise her role as mysterious freedom fighter Chani and once again stars opposite Timothée Chalamet’s warrior prince Paul, has shrugged off any expectation of gowned glamour at the film’s various premieres around the globe, instead opting for an array of futuristic ensembles. It would be easy for something like the full-body chromed-out suit the 27-year-old wore in February to Dune: Part Two’s world premiere in London’s Leicester Square to veer into sexy robot Halloween costume territory, but she carried off the archival Thierry Mugler piece, complete with stiletto boots, gloves with talon-like fingers, and a bejeweled choker, with edgy aplomb. It fits the film’s futuristic theme, yes, but it also scans as the highest of fashion.
It’s not all robots and spaceships, either: Zendaya has also worn a handful of desert-inspired ensembles while promoting the Denis Villeneuve film, which hits theaters Friday. At the February 12 Paris premiere, the actor donned a custom two-piece Louis Vuitton set, a full skirt and crop top featuring heaps of heavy gold brocade fabric. The top included a substantial cowl neck, serving not only as a sculptural design feature, but also a possible nod to the variety of hooded robes worn by many of the film’s characters.
Throughout the tour, whether she’s going military chic in matching jumpsuits with Chalamet in South Korea or invoking the palette of an outer space desert in Mexico City, Zendaya’s Dune: Part Two fashion has been out of this world. Check out all of her stellar looks below.
