Car hits, kills man after swerving to avoid yielding vehicles: LAPD

The Los Angeles Police Department is looking for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian in the Florence area of South Los Angeles Sunday night after intentionally swerving into oncoming lanes to avoid the other cars stopped for people crossing the street.

A few minutes after 11 p.m., a vehicle headed south on Avalon Boulevard “at a high rate of speed” neared a group of vehicles yielding to pedestrians, police said in a news release.

Instead of joining the other vehicles in yielding, the suspect vehicle, which police believe is a white-colored sedan, “veered into the northbound lanes” and struck one of the pedestrians, police said.

That pedestrian, a man in his 40s, was declared dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

The sedan was last seen continuing south on Avalon near the intersection with 83rd Street.
