PARKERSBURG — No one was injured in a Monday morning apartment fire in south Parkersburg, but a city firefighter was struck by a car while responding to the blaze.
Parkersburg Fire Chief Jason Matthews said the firefighter, whose name he declined to release, was taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center and released.
“They said he could report back to work tomorrow,” Matthews said.
The fire was reported at 7:30 a.m. Monday in an apartment at 1000 Kemper St. after the residents were awakened by a smoke alarm, Matthews said. The fire appeared to be electrical in nature and accidental.
“They were charging an electric scooter in the living room,” Matthews said
The battery apparently malfunctioned or overheated, he said, as the fire started at the scooter and spread to furniture in the living room. A resident attempted to use an extinguisher but could not put out the fire, Matthews said.
“Everybody did get out safely,” he said.
Firefighters arrived on the scene in a little over three minutes. The fire was extinguished in less than 15 minutes, Matthews said. It did not spread to any other units in the single-story building.
A fire truck parked at the Dollar General across from the apartment. A firefighter making his way across DuPont Road was struck by a Mitsubishi Outlander whose driver “failed to take the necessary precautions after seeing emergency lights,” Parkersburg Police Chief Matthew Board said.
The driver, Sarah Davis, 40, of Parkersburg, was cited for failure to use due care, he said.
A second accident happened nearby when two vehicles traveling east on DuPont Road were stopped, yielding to a fire truck.
A Subaru Forester driven by Derek Parsons, 18, of Parkersburg, rear-ended the stopped vehicles while he was looking at the fire scene, Board said. No citation was issued because no one was injured in the crash, he said.
Both lanes of Dupont Road were closed while the emergencies were dealt with.
