James Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman, has fans on the edge of their seats.

James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, has shown the first scene from his picture, which is currently being shot in Norway.

Speaking frankly with a Norwegian media, the filmmaker explained why he chose Svalbard for the opening sequence of Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel.

“We have filmed the first scenes [in Svalbard], which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude,” Gunn told Svalbardposten, according to VG.

“We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places.”

He went on to say, “First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

Superman, formerly dubbed Superman Legacy, is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025 in theaters.

Although Gunn did not reveal the specific number of sequences set in Svalbard, he did state that portions of the film would be shot in Ohio at some point during production.
