Birria tacos, spinach and artichoke dip and Ahi tuna salad: Best things we ate this week

Birria tacos at Los Reyes Mexican Grill

When it comes to the best things I ate this week, the birria tacos at Los Reyes are a stop-the-presses kind of moment. My daughter had been telling me about how good the food at Los Reyes is, but I will confess that I’m a bit of a Mexican food snob. My husband makes the best Mexican food around. What with him being born in Mexico, he cooks authentic recipes his mother and grandmother taught him. I didn’t think I needed another Mexican restaurant in my local repertoire.

I was wrong.

Los Reyes’ birria tacos, with radishes and all sorts of other accoutrements on the side, have just found their way to the top of my local Mexican food destinations. My husband ordered the carne asada, which he said was good, but the birria tacos were the star.

Note: Los Reyes’ beans are excellent — and if you’re into beans, try their bean and cheese appetizer. There are two locations in Baton Rouge. I’ve only been to the one on W. Lee and am not certain if the menus or food is the same at both of the restaurants.

Spinach and artichoke dip at Walk-Ons

The spinach and artichoke dip at Walk-Ons is stellar — all the creamy, cheesy goodness with lots of flavor and ideal chips as the dip vehicle.

We’ll keep it short and simple. If you like spinach and artichoke dip, try the one at Walk-Ons. It’s top notch. As in, I can’t stop thinking about it and want to go back even though I only had it yesterday.

It is steaming cheesy-creamy-flavorful goodness. It’s cooked with little cheese crispies. As spinach and artichoke aficionados will note, the dip, importantly, is served with the ideal accompaniment — salted chips that are not too thick but can still hold up to the dip.

Ahi tuna salad from Mestizo Louisiana Mexican Cuisine

Ahi tuna salad from Mestizo Louisiana Mexican Cuisine

This was my first time at Mestizo’s, but it won’t be my last.

I was impressed by the wide array of menu items, including keto, vegetarian and gluten free options. Since it was Friday, and I participate in Lent, I was looking for seafood. The ahi tuna salad fit the bill, made with mixed greens, seared ahi tuna, cilantro, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, sliced almonds, peanut mole, tostada, guacamole and slaw.

The salad was crisp, and the ingredients were fresh — it was everything I wanted in a lunch meal.
