Heavy police presence seen on State Street in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – New details are emerging into an incident at the High School of Science and Technology in Springfield.

Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said that a Sci-Tech resource officer called for a large disturbance around 2:10 p.m. Monday.

He added that one suspect, who had a gun, struck a victim and one shot was fired from within a school hallway.

Nobody was hit by the gunfire and no serious injuries were reported.

Walsh added that one suspect is in custody and the shooting suspect remains at large. He added that a preliminary investigation found that a “security door was breached by a student who let the assailants inside.”

We’re hearing from a Sci-Tech student who was inside the building when this all took place, she walked us through the moment the place she was sent to learn at was put into lockdown over a shooting.

“He said something like ladies and gentlemen we’re going into lockdown, don’t let your students come out of the classroom until we say so,” said Hannah, student at Sci-Tech. “It was at the end of the day so we didn’t leave until 2:40 p.m., somewhere around there. I’ve never been in a situation like that, so it was pretty scary. But I think I handled it well.”

We’re also hearing from the superintendent Warwick on Monday evening, he said in part:

“The safety of students and staff is the top priority for Springfield Public Schools and the district is committed to fully investigating the details of this matter. Counseling services will be readily accessible to students and staff starting tomorrow morning, offering a safe space for those seeking assistance processing the unsettling events of today.”

Walsh said there will be an increased number of officers on campus on Tuesday morning.

The case remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Detective Bureau.

Western Mass News has a crew at the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.
