New specialty license plates support Virginia arts community

The Virginia Commission for the Arts has launched a new specialty license plates program to support the state’s art community.

“Virginians are enthusiastic supporters of the arts,” VCA Executive Director Margaret Hancock said. “Drivers throughout the Commonwealth have the unique opportunity to share their passion by displaying the Virginians for the Arts license plate on their vehicle. With its colorful burst inspired by colors from the Virginia state flag, it’s an expression of joy, much like the art it serves to elevate.”

In 2023, the VCA invested $5.2 million in the arts by providing grant funds to 800 organizations supporting visual arts, performing arts, literary arts and more.

In addition to the new VCA-inspired plates, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles lists 335 other specialty license plates that drivers can register for. Drivers can request license plates that display the name of a college/university, a branch of the armed forces or a nonprofit, like the Alzheimer’s Association. Specialty license plates can also be decorated with Virginia-specific things, like the cardinal, which is the state bird.

Drivers can also personalize their license plates with any combination of letters and numbers that is meaningful, as long as it fits within the guidelines provided by the DMV.

The registration fee for a personalized or specialty license plate is $25 annually. There is also a $10 annual fee in addition to the registration fee. Sixty percent of the funds generated through license plate sales and renewals will go directly to grants designated for artists and arts organizations.
