The gowns on the 2024 Oscars red carpet riffed on classic Old Hollywood elegance, but when it came to jewellery, it was a case of one size fits all – and that size was extra large. There were stop-you-in-your-tracks necklaces, gems that outshone the gold statues, and plenty of male actors experimenting with maximalist sparkle.
Layering was something of a theme, as Emily Blunt – in Tiffany & Co. – and Charlize Theron – wearing Boucheron – both wore chokers paired with necklaces. The carat count was sky-high, between Gabrielle Union-Wade’s astonishing 31-carat sky-blue aquamarine by Tiffany & Co., Zendaya’s cherry-hued rubellite earrings by Bulgari, and the sunny yellow sapphire by Louis Vuitton that twinkled around the neck of Best Actress winner Emma Stone. The stone brought a refreshing touch of sprezzatura to her pale mint gown, also designed by Louis Vuitton.
A David Yurman brooch twinkled at the heart of Colman Domingo’s black bow-tie, while Barbie’s Simu Liu secured his tuxedo jacket with a De Beers diamond brooch from the “Imaginary Nature” high jewellery collection. To collect his Best Actor Oscar for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy wore a customised brooch composed of eight concentric trapeziums, evoking the shape of the interior components of J Robert Oppenheimer’s portentous invention.
It was a big night for watches, too. Michelle Yeoh accessorised her silver Balenciaga gown with a diamond-encrusted Richard Mille timepiece and a pair of sparkling earrings by Cindy Chao. Anya Taylor-Joy wore a minuscule Jaeger-LeCoultre 101 Reine watch – a rare diminutive piece on a night replete with big rocks.
