Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit will review a police shooting in Yakima Thursday morning that left a suspected vehicle thief wounded.
Yakima police were called around 7:10 a.m. by someone who found their stolen vehicle in north Yakima, a news release from YPD said. Police located the car, and the driver would not stop. Police did not continue the pursuit because it didn’t meet state criteria, the release said.
The suspect stopped in the parking lot of a large apartment building and fled on foot at Buwalda and East Thorton lanes, where a confrontation occurred and the suspect was shot, Police Capt. Jay Seely said. One officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect multiple times, the release said.
The suspect was taken to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A firearm was found in the area of the incident, the release said.
Seely said the officer, who is not being named at this time, will be placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.
YPD will conduct its own administrative review of the incident while the special investigations unit, an agency consisting of detectives from various police departments around the Valley, will investigate the shooting. The unit will file a report with the Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to determine if the shooting was legally justified.
