BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Earlier this week, the FDA updated its nutrition label guidelines.
The agency is also working on reforming its healthy label rules. If the FDA moves forward with its proposed changes, the requirements for claiming if a product is healthy will be more strict.
Some foods considered healthy now, like white bread, won’t be able to claim to be healthy. As a part of its plan, the FDA proposed creating a healthy logo eligible products can use.
“That healthy label on there will be able to tell you, ‘Okay, this is a regulated food product, I know that it’s not going to be super high in sodium and added sugar, and this is something I can put in my cart rather quickly without feeling too uncomfortable,’” said Rachel Iverson, a dietitian at Foundation Fitness & Nutrition.
Iverson said while a healthy logo would be helpful, you shouldn’t completely cut out other foods just because they aren’t marked as healthy. She said there is a time and a place for ice cream in a balanced diet.
