State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that Bangladesh is giving priority to environment conservation in all development activities.
He said this in a panel discussion titled “Dialogue Hub: Energy-Water-Food Nexus: Holistic Solutions for Food and Water Supply Powered by Renewables” at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2024 in Germany on Wednesday.
He said: “Advances in sustainable agricultural systems and renewable energy are therefore noteworthy. Diesel-to-solar irrigation pumps will not only reduce carbon emissions but at the same time will maintain the balance of the environment by conserving groundwater resources.
“A plan to install 45,000 solar irrigation pumps by 2031 has been adopted. Through this, 13,00,000 farmers of the country are expected to get benefits,” he added.
The state minister said: “Installation of modern solar irrigation will significantly reduce diesel consumption and reduce adverse effects of climate change. Renewable energy use and investment should be increased to mitigate over-extraction of groundwater.
“Innovation through international cooperation, use of modern technology, exchange of financial resources and experience will contribute to sustainable development. Developed countries including Germany should play a leading role in technology transfer,” he added.
The representatives of the countries participating in the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue-2024 were present.
