Armed robbery suspects hit officer’s car in getaway attempt, police say


MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was taken into custody after he allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint, then got in a stolen Kia that struck a police officer’s car in a getaway attempt.

Kwame Gary, 20, is charged with Aggravated Robbery, Evading Arrest, Illegal Possession of a Credit/Debit Card, Identity Theft, and four counts of Theft of Property. Bond has not been set.

Sunday morning, a man told Memphis Police he was robbed at gunpoint by three men in a red Kia Soul on American Way.

The victim said two men robbed him while one remained in the car. They reportedly took his iPhone 15 worth $1,500, wallet, $50 in cash and credit and debit cards.

Shortly after, an officer saw Gary exiting a gas station on Getwell and getting into a red Kia Soul. He initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped off, hitting the officer’s car.

The car stopped on Knight Arnold, and two men fled on foot. Both were taken into custody.

Police say the driver of the car was identified as a minor. Gary was the passenger.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the suspects used the victim’s cards three times, totaling $64.77. The Kia Soul was also reported stolen out of Hickory Hill.

Kwame Gary is set to appear in court Tuesday morning.
