NORTH FORK, NY — A man trying to evade police crashed over the guardrail and into the Long Island Sound at 67 Steps Beach in Greenport Monday, police said.
According to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, the incident began at 10:45 a.m. with a criminal mischief investigation involving a person who has not yet been identified, who was also wanted on two active domestic warrants. His vehicle was seen on Hortons Lane and Route 25 in Southold; he then drove up to County Road 48 in Peconic, where he was stopped, police said.
The man took off on what led to a 45-minute chase; he headed west to Riverhead, then made a U-turn and drove east on New York State Route 25 before heading back up to County Road 48 again, Flatley said. “He was on just about every road,” he said.
At some points, the man was racing at about 100 miles an hour, Flatley said. Suffolk County Aviation had helicopters overhead, the chief said.
When the man got to S0und Road in Greenport, he made a left toward 67 Steps at a “high rate of speed,” Flatley said. Without slowing down, he hit the guard rail and went airborne, the car then plunging into the water, he said.
Officers were able to pull him out of the water; he sustained minor injuries, Flatley said. The man was arrested; charges have not yet been disclosed, as the report is forthcoming, Flatley said.
