‘I am scared of living here,’ Colorado Springs mother worried after her car was stolen, crashed and set on fire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – After a reported theft, crash and arson, a Colorado Springs woman is worried for her family’s safety as she works to bounce back from what she’s lost.

Kenia Salgado said she had just gotten home from a long day of running errands on Friday, parking her car in her usual spot, right outside her apartment.

“I was like, ‘yeah, tomorrow I have some things to do, I’ll be fine,’” she said, remembering the events.

She lives near the area of Powers and Stetson Hills, with her usual parking space being closer to the back area of the complex, further away from any main roads. She said because of this, she never thought she had any reason to worry.

On Saturday morning, she walked out to her parking spot and found someone else parked there.

“I thought I was going crazy, I was like, ‘maybe I parked it somewhere else, I took it around the corner.’ Nope, it was just gone,” Salgado said.

After reporting the loss to her apartment’s office and police, she said she spent the day worrying.

On Sunday morning around 3:30 a.m., she said police gave her a call.

According to CSPD, someone had called to report a vehicle that had crashed into a tree in a neighborhood near Dublin and Austin Bluffs. They said that vehicle was on fire.

When officer arrived, they reported that the vehicle had been stolen and, after it was crashed, had been intentionally set on fire. Any suspects who might have been involved had already fled, according to police.

Salgado said her car was left undrivable and that whoever took it had stolen everything inside.

“I had my baby’s stroller, his car seat base, I had documents as well, you know, my personal information, his personal information as well,” she said.

Despite losing a lot of her personal information, she said that wasn’t her main concern. She said she’s focused on how she’s supposed to take care of her son.

“You know, I needed the stroller, I needed that car seat base, I need those things, you know,” Salgado said, “and it’s like, now I have nothing for him, and that’s where my main problem is.”

Now, she’s trying to pay for everything with her savings since she isn’t working, with the added financial strain of paying for a rental car and finding new things for her son.

She has a fundraiser set up while she waits for the investigation from police and insurance.

More so, though, Salgado said she is worried for her safety.

“I am so scared, I am scared of living here,” she said. “Like, I do have a baby, you know, and stuff like that, so I feel like now, I have to carry extra protection on me, or I have to carry something on me at all times in order to protect myself and my baby, as well.”

She said she feels like the crime was excessive and targeted.

“So, I’m just like why? How did they get in my car? How did they know it was sitting there, you know? Like, was it already planned? Was I already being looked at?” she said.

At the time of writing, police have not released any suspect information and say the case is under investigation.
