TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Tucson Planning Commission is currently in session to discuss new regulations for food truck courts.
The Pit is just one of the many food truck courts scattered throughout Tucson. This area serves as an example of what the city aims to regulate.
Amber Donahue, owner of The Pit, pointed out that the city lacks comprehensive regulations for food truck courts. She believes that the absence of clear guidelines has been negatively impacting her business.
Donahue explains, “Because Tucson did not have any specific zoning or development code related to food truck congregation, there was really no roadmap to operate under.”
This is precisely why food truck owners are actively participating in a virtual public hearing. The city is contemplating a code amendment to introduce new regulations, which would address various aspects such as electricity, bathroom facilities, parking, and requirements related to landscaping and pavement surfaces, as noted by Carver Struve, the City of Tucson Principal Planner.
These proposed regulations specifically concern the commercial areas where food truck courts can be established. While some food truck owners appreciate the city’s efforts to introduce regulations, they still harbor one significant concern.
Donahue elaborates, “We invested a lot of money into this primary location off 22nd and Pantano, and were unaware of any of the problems it would cause. So, in order to come up with a whole new landscape, it may pose a significant concern.”
Donahue has dedicated two years to growing her business at The Pit and hopes that the city and food truck owners utilizing the court can find a harmonious balance.
Struve emphasizes the importance of food trucks as incubators for small businesses within the city, acknowledging that they sometimes evolve into brick-and-mortar restaurants. The city intends to support and encourage such businesses, believing that this code amendment will play a pivotal role in achieving that goal.
