Holger Rune has discussed working with Boris Becker and explained how the tennis legend can help him after spending a week training with the German.

Rune revealed Becker shared advice with him when he was younger and highlighted the value of working with someone who has experienced the same situations as him.

The 20-year-old confirmed after the US Open that he had ended his working relationship with Patrick Mouratoglou after being coached by the Frenchman since October last year. He won his only ATP Masters 1000 title to date at the 2022 Paris Masters with Mouratoglou on his team.

Rune was joined by six-time Grand Slam champion Becker for a week of practice in Monaco last week ahead of his appearance at this week’s 2023 Stockholm Open.

The world No 6 is the defending champion at the ATP 250 event in the Swedish capital, having defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2022 final.

Since reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in July, Rune has lost nine of his last 10 matches during a difficult run. He had been plagued by a back injury, but explained he was healthy again ahead of the recent China Open in Beijing, where he earned his first win since Wimbledon.

Rune suffered a heavy 0-6, 2-6 defeat to Brandon Nakashima in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters in his most recent outing.

In an interview with TV2 Sport, Rune addressed his week of training with former world No 1 Becker with a partnership announcement reportedly imminent.

“It was a really good week of training. I have known Boris for a long time. He follows tennis a lot in general and he has written to me a few times. Also when I was a little younger, he gave me some tips and tricks. There he showed that he supports me,” said the Dane.

“You can feel it. That’s really a big difference. He can feel what I’m feeling. He can’t just say what he thinks I’m feeling, but he can feel it because he’s been in those situations himself. So it’s a different sensation and feeling. It is definitely a good thing to have someone who has tried it himself.”

Becker coached tennis great Novak Djokovic between 2014 and 2016 – during which time the Serb won six Grand Slam titles and 14 ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.

Rune will face Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match at the Stockholm Open on Wednesday.
