Here’s a look at the top seeds and all of the area qualifiers for the WIAA state girls tennis tournament


The 53rd Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state girls tennis tournament is Thursday through Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Play begins at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with first-round matches. Friday’s competition starts at 9 a.m. and will go through quarterfinals in singles and doubles in both divisions.

The semifinals start at 9 a.m. Saturday, with championship and placement matches to follow.

Tickets are $9 plus online fees per day for adults and students and can be purchased on the WIAA website.

Here’s a look at the top players to watch and all of the area qualifiers:

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Singles

Maria Burrows, sr., Kohler

Burrows brings a 19-6 record to the state tournament in Division 2 singles. She is at state for the third year in a row after first-round losses the last two seasons. Burrows took first place in No. 1 singles at the Kohler Sectional.                                                             

Julia Gurholt, jr., Kimberly

Gurholt earned the No. 4 seed in Division 1 singles with a 24-5 record. She won her first-round match at state last year and also won in the first round as a freshman. She took first place at No. 1 singles at the Fox Valley Association conference tournament this year and second place at the Oshkosh North Sectional.  

Olivia Minikel, sr., Manitowoc Lincoln

Minikel is the No. 1 seed in Division 1 singles with a 29-0 record. She took fifth place at state last year, advanced to the quarterfinals as a sophomore in 2021 and took fourth place during the alternate COVID spring season her freshman year. She took first place in No. 1 singles at the Oshkosh North Sectional.

Adel Schneider, so., St. Mary Catholic

Schneider brings a 20-4 record into the Division 2 singles competition. She took second place in No. 1 singles at the Kohler Sectional, losing to Burrows. Schneider won her first-round match at state last year before losing to the No. 3 seed in the second round.

Karlie Schock, fr., Bay Port

Schock, a nationally ranked player in her age group, earned the No. 2 seed in Division 1 singles and brings an 11-1 record into her first state tournament. She took first place in No. 1 singles at the Notre Dame Sectional, winning all three matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

De Pere's Ana Cristescu and partner Lillianna Graf are the No. 3 seed in Division 1 doubles at this week's WIAA state tennis tournament in Madison.

Doubles

Ana Cristescu, so., and Lillianna Graf, fr., De Pere

Cristescu and Graf have the No. 3 seed in Division 1 doubles with a 21-2 record. Cristescu took third place at state last year playing with senior Sophia Fergus. Cristescu and Graf finished second in No. 1 doubles at the Oshkosh North Sectional, losing to Ritu Nair and Melina Fiorentini of Homestead who are seeded No. 2 at state.

Keagan Potter, sr., and Kate Conger, sr., Oshkosh West

Potter and Conger are the No. 8 seed in Division 1 doubles and return to state together with a 24-7 record. They finished in fourth place at state last year. Potter and Conger took first place at No. 1 doubles at the Fox Valley Association conference tournament and lost to Nair and Fiorentini in the sectional semifinals.

Gabby Stammer, jr., and Grace Ogden, jr., Xavier

Stammer and Ogden are the No. 3 seed in Division 2 doubles. They head to state with a 17-4 record. Stammer and Ogden both competed at state last year in doubles but played with different partners and both lost in the first round. They took second place at the Kohler Sectional in No. 1 doubles.

Sophia Torke, jr., and Grace Villwock, so., Kohler

Torke and Villwock are the No. 2 seed in Division 2 doubles and bring a 24-1 record to Madison. Torke and Villwock played together at state last year and won their first two matches. The duo took first place at the Kohler Sectional, beating Stammer and Ogden 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.
