Lexington Music competition fosters community and creativity

Baruch College’s campus recently reverberated with the sounds of musical talent as the Lexington Music club hosted a music competition on April 2. Showcasing the diverse musical prowess of student musicians, the event offered performers the chance to vie for cash prizes ranging from $25-$100.

From soulful serenades to energetic anthems, the competition provided a platform for aspiring artists to share their passion for music and leave their mark on the audience. The range of musical genres performed during the competition was diverse. With guitar, piano, and singing, the performers showcased an impressive breadth of styles and influences.

Lexington Music president Hanson Wu was surprised and excited about the turnout of the competition. He said that the reason he wanted to start the club was to foster community with student artists.

“I felt like there are a lot of musicians in this school,” Wu said. “So I wanted to be that person that can outreach them.”

An original track by Justin Huang was written the night before the event.

Although this was a competition, it closely resembled a jam session for Baruch students to let their creative juices flow. Many impromptu participants came onstage and borrowed each other’s equipment for the enjoyment of the audience.

The first place winner was Rully Dharma who performed on piano, second place was Justin Huang who performed on piano and guitar, and third place was Taiyo Kuwamura who performed on his guitar. In fourth place was Juan Ribon who sang along with his guitar, and last but not least was fifth place winner Katrina Yabut who performed a musical ballad.

Solos, duos and trios performed at the event as well. Covers of songs were also reincarnated into fresh takes. One of the most memorable covers was Prateek Kuhad’s “cold/mess.”

Lexington Music notes that all are welcome to participate in events like this, which they hope to hold more of in the future. Kai Shao, treasurer of Lexington Music, said, “if you have an interest in music don’t fear to come to us, we’re a very welcoming community.”
