BOO BALL to support Acorn Center for the Performing Arts


The Acorn’s First BOO BALL is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Halloween fundraiser will help support The Acorn Center for the Performing Arts – Southwest Michigan’s nonprofit arts and culture hub.

Scare up a costume to win spooktacular prizes; Feast on freaky fabulous food from Classic Catering; Imbibe in a witches brew of Halloween cocktails; “BOOgie” to the music of Expo ‘76 and The Shams Band; The only thing LIVE will be our auction of monstrous (read: luxury) items; And so much more frightful fun!

The monthly edition of Open Mic Night at The Acorn, 107 Generations Drive, Three Oaks, will feature youth performers at 7 p.m. Sunday, October 22.

Service League Arts & Crafts

The New Buffalo Service League Arts & Crafts Show is scheduled for Saturday, October 21st, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gyms at the New Buffalo High School/Middle School, 1112 E. Clay St., New Buffalo.

More than 100 arts & crafts booths will be offering handcrafted items for the home, yard, holidays and beautiful wearable art items as well as delectable edibles, toys and floral décor.

Service League members will be having their famous bake sale with a mouth-watering variety of home-baked goods (you’ll want to make sure you get there early!) In addition, members will be offering their breakfast and luncheon menu (complete with home-baked apple slices) for busy shoppers and crafters.

Proceeds of the show are dedicated to the Mary Ann Frey Scholarship Fund which provides scholarship awards to area high school seniors each year.

Admission to the show is $2 and the building is handicap accessible.

Spooky screenings

The Coastline Children’s Film Festival will have an open house (from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21) and 7 p.m. film screening (of “The Bat”) at its storefront, 5861 Sawyer Road. Spooky board games and refreshments will be offered.

The Coastline Children’s Film Festival also plans a screening of “White Zombie” at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Emma Hearth & Market, 9709 Red Arrow Highway in Bridgman.

Goods & Heroes Studio opening

The Harbor Country Chamber with the proprietors of the new Goods & Heroes Studio will cut a ribbon and roll open the garage doors at 4 p.m. Thursday, October 26, in Three Oaks.

The ceremony will take place at the rear entrance on Maple Street adjacent to the 104 N. Elm Street building. The community is invited to join the celebration until 7 p.m. and mingle in the sprawling space. Refreshments will be served.

104 N. Elm Street, built in 1948 as the Lintner Chevy Car Dealership, will become the headquarters of Goods & Heroes, with a footprint of over 11,000 square feet. The “Studio” which was formerly the auto body shop garage and paint booth, is the first and smallest part of the building complex that designers and owners Suzanna Bierwirth and Brad Simpson have reimagined so far. See how the garage building has transformed into a stunning studio and a place for community gatherings, trunk shows, fundraisers, openings, parties, and photoshoots.

Gourd decorating class

The Arts of Mediator at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 14280 Red Arrow Highway, Harbert, will be offering a class on gourd decorating at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, November 5.

Mediator’s own Ruth Merrifield is hosting the workshop and will be teaching woodburning and painting techniques. Each participant will make designs on prepared gourds. There will be a soup and salad luncheon provided. RV Trunk or Treat

A Trunk-or-Treat event will take place at the River Valley all-grades school from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Cow Pie Bingo

Bridgman High School’s Post Prom committee is thrilled to announce the Cow Pie Bingo and Nelson’s Port-a-Pit Chicken fundraiser, set to take place on Sunday, November 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Bridgman High School grounds.

The main attraction of the event, Cow Pie Bingo, will have participants on the edge of their seats. Picture this: a giant grid painted on the grass, a cow with a mind of its own, and $1,000 up for grabs. When the cow does its business, the owner of the square where it lands wins big! It’s a game of chance like no other, and the excitement is palpable. Squares can be purchased $20/each (maximum 300 available) by emailing [email protected].

Nelson’s Port-a-Pit Chicken is joining the party with their mouthwatering chicken and Pit-a-toes. Their delectable offerings will satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. With every bite, attendees will know they’re contributing to a great cause. Pre-sale tickets only available for $15 per dinner.

The funds raised at this event will go directly toward Bridgman High School’s Post Prom celebration, ensuring a safe and memorable night for students after their prom.

Fall Fest 2023

Fall Fest 2023 is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21, at Paws for Humanity, 14671 Three Oaks Road.

The Annual Paws for Humanity Fall Fest will feature sanctuary tours, hayrides, live music, fall favorite foods and snacks along with games and crafts for kids. Sanctuary tours featuring our alpacas, horses, ducks, goats, donkeys as well as dogs and cats begin at 11:30 a.m. Enjoy a hayride, crafts (including pumpkin painting, tye dye and pinecone crafts), games, face painting, food and live music while visiting our animals and learning all about them!

Gates will be open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Paws for Humanity is an animal sanctuary located outside of Three Oaks, Michigan and is home to 37 (and counting) animals, each having a story to tell, gifts to teach and love to share.

Admission to Fall Fest is $10 with children 12 and under free.

Barrel-Aged Brewfest

The annual Journeyman Distillery fundraiser (Set for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21) features tastings of barrel-aged beers from various local participating breweries. Along with local breweries, there will be live music, food, and family-friendly games.

Three Oaks will host the Three Oaks Autumn Stroll on October 21st. This day-long event, organized by the newly formed “Stroll Three Oaks” grassroots organization, promises to be a delightful celebration of fall in the heart of the village.

NB Halloween Parade

The annual New Buffalo Halloween Costume Contest and Parade are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, with the parade stepping off after costumes have been judged. Trick-or-treating in the city is set for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Woodland Shores Trunk or Treat

A Trunk or Treat will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 29, at Woodland Shores Baptist Church in Bridgman.

The event is totally free, including cider and donuts, and you can register to win a Meijer Gift Card! Bring the whole family and enjoy trick or treating in a safe environment.

Taste of Old Hollywood

Dunes Arts Summer Theatre announces an autumn gala in support of The Dunes Arts Foundation. A Taste of Old Hollywood takes place on Saturday, October 21 from 6 p.m. CST (7 p.m. EST) to 10 p.m. CST (11 p.m. EST) at Pottawattomie Country Club,1900 Springland Ave., Michigan City, Ind.

“The Dunes’ Theatre building was built in 1941 with a big dream to bring a taste of Hollywood to Michigan City,” says Artistic Director Steve Scott. “Seventy-two years later we have a lot to celebrate. In addition to audience and critical acclaim for this summer’s three major productions, our Broadway Cabaret, our first-ever New Plays Festival, and our new affiliations with the Safe Harbor program for children and the Holdcraft Center, we have grown our series of classes for pre-teens and teenagers. A Taste of Old Hollywood will celebrate all of this while looking forward to an even more successful season in 2024.”

Kicking off with cocktails and dinner, the evening’s entertainment will be hosted by Master of Ceremonies DJ Isaac and includes live band and dance performances inspired by the Classic Hollywood era, showcasing dancer and choreographer Emmie Riegel. Lighthouse Keeper presentation

The New Buffalo Library will present a program on famed Michigan City lighthouse keeper Harriet Colfax on Tuesday, October 24, at 6:30 pm Eastern. Colfax operated the lighthouse for 43 years, from the Civil War era through the Gilded Age.

To those used to seeing men running lighthouses, Colfax initially seemed an unconventional choice for the job, but she never failed to keep the flames lit. Her tenure saw many changes around Lake Michigan and in Michigan City.

Presenter Sandra L. Young is a historian, actress and author. She spent three decades in community theater and has presented at nearly 50 events in the community. Her presentation in New Buffalo is part of the Friends of the Library’s Community Forum series.

This presentation is free and open to all. The New Buffalo Library is located at 33 N. Thompson St. in downtown New Buffalo.

Foundation information tour

The Berrien Community Foundation is making stops throughout Berrien County to talk about the multiple grant opportunities offered through the foundation and new deadlines for many of its grants.

“We awarded $6.9 million in grants last year to local nonprofits doing good work in Berrien County,” said Berrien Community Foundation Program Director Susan Matheny. “We want to set up local nonprofits for success when they apply to our grant opportunities. By attending one of these informational meetings, they can know all the new deadlines for grants this year, learn about the grant process, make a plan for funding opportunities and ask questions.”

Nonprofits such as 501c3s, schools, religious organizations and government agencies are invited to attend one of the stops on the informational tour. The same information will be provided at each meeting, so agencies only need to attend one meeting. Registration is not needed, and there is no cost to attend.

Story Hour in New Troy

Wiggles & Giggles with Miss Ollie, New Troy Community Center’s Story Hour for pre-schoolers, takes place Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. throughout the school year.

In addition to stories, children will do projects, games, crafts, and other learning experiences with former elementary school teacher, Ollie Jane Rosenthal, who always provides for a fun, enriching time.

All children 3 years or older are welcome to attend. You do not need to be a resident of New Troy, but a parent or guardian is required to remain with the children.

Saturday Morning Cartoons

Join us in youth services every Saturday (10 a.m. to noon) to bring back the tradition of Saturday morning cartoons. We will be airing the classics. We encourage pajamas and will provide the cereal.
