New soul food restaurant opens in Florence

FLORENCE — A new spot for Florence residents to satisfy their soul food cravings has opened in the Pee Dee Regional Airport.

Florence is the latest stop for Mitchell’s Soul Food, which has appeared in one form or another across the United States.

Victoria Mitchell, the owner, has followed her husband, who is in the Navy, as he moves from base-to-base. In every new home, Mitchell has opened a new version of her soul food restaurant. And in each location, she’s found people who love her food.

“I’ve been all over the world, all over the place with this food service,” Mitchell said.

The restaurateur has had businesses in Virginia, Hawaii and the Carolinas.

Mitchell prided herself on creating a space for service members to sit back, relax and enjoy some good food while she was serving food on military bases.

“That’s what I bring,” she said. “I bring good food and a good time.”

After tiring of starting over year-after-year, Mitchell pivoted to a food truck about five years ago, which served her well, she said.

Recently, she moved to Florence to be closer to family. She stumbled on the vacant restaurant space in the Pee Dee Regional Airport and decided to open a brick and mortar store again. It officially opened in September.

In some ways, the business has been in the family for decades.

Mitchell’s inspiration as a chef came from her mother, who hosted a Friday fish fry every week. The fish fry became a lasting family tradition.

Mitchell’s great-grandfather was also a cook in the army. Mitchell feels like she’s following in his footsteps bouncing from base to base, cooking for service members.

Mitchell recommended the catfish, chicken and pork chops, but she said there’s plenty to try for anyone coming back for a return visit.

Mitchell’s Soul Food is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
