Florida Tech professor allegedly vandalizes basketball player’s car, police say


A Florida Tech professor was arrested this week for allegedly vandalizing a basketball player’s car. He lost his job a few days later.According to Melbourne police, 56-year-old Douglas Willard was charged with felony criminal mischief.In a statement Thursday afternoon, Florida Tech announced:“The employment of Florida Institute of Technology visiting assistant professor Douglas Willard has been terminated following his arrest by the Melbourne Police Department. His classes and teaching responsibilities, which centered on senior design projects, have been reassigned to other faculty.Willard had been with the university since 2018 in the Aerospace, Physics and Space Sciences department and also works at the Kennedy Space Center, according to an online bio. When contacted by WESH, NASA had no comment.The incident happened at the Clemente Center in January this year, according to the police report.It detailed that one of the basketball players came out to find scratches on his car as if someone was trying to draw something, and one of the rearview mirrors was dangling from wires.According to police, the student said his ex-girlfriend’s “assumed boyfriend,” Willard, was responsible for the damage.Willard’s Florida Tech ID card history shows him entering nearby buildings around the time of the incident, according to police.Melbourne PD reviewed security footage from cameras in positions near the gym, and in one clip, the report says, Willard was carrying a crowbar and then drove over to the gym. He then parked right next to the player’s vehicle. The report details that security footage from a few hours later shows Willard with the ex-girlfriend.When police questioned her, she denied ever having a relationship with the former professor. Willard was released on $ 2,000 bond.
