In New York City there’s a community of heroes who dedicate their lives to caring for the often overlooked inhabitants of the urban jungle. One is Amina Martin, a Russian immigrant residing in Brooklyn, whose small apartment doubles as a sanctuary for injured and abandoned birds.

Among the many birds in Amina Martin’s home is Anfisa, a pigeon with ombré gray plumage, who has developed a peculiar fondness for Martin’s husband, manifesting her affection by laying eggs on his pillow.

Martin is just one of a handful of individuals across the boroughs of New York City who dedicate themselves to rehabilitating creatures that many would consider pests. From injured pigeons to orphaned opossums and squirrels, these compassionate souls transform their homes into makeshift wildlife hospitals, turning their living rooms into sanctuaries for those in need.

Despite the challenges and sacrifices they face, these wildlife rehabbers operate under the radar, often at odds with city regulations and their landlords. Many of them document their tireless work on social media platforms, amassing followers who admire their dedication to these misunderstood creatures.

But why do they do it? For these rehabbers, it’s about more than just caring for injured animals; it’s about fostering a deeper connection with nature and their environment. They see these creatures not as nuisances but as integral parts of the urban ecosystem. In a city where the hustle and bustle can often leave individuals feeling disconnected from nature, these rehabbers find purpose in their work!
