Women’s Tennis Goes Unbeaten on Second Day of ITA Super Regionals; Peus to Semis

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Brown women’s tennis was victorious in each of its matches on the second day of the ITA Super Regionals on Saturday.

Sophomore Phoebe Peus won her quarterfinal match to advance to the semifinals, while senior Ali Benedetto and junior Addison Ahlstrom, and junior Lindsey Hofflander and Peus each won in the first round of the doubles tournament.

In the early match, Peus dominated against junior Gavriella Smith from Penn (6-3, 6-1).

Both doubles pairs won as well in competitive matches. Benedetto and Ahlstrom beat juniors Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans from Army (77-65, 6-1). Hofflander and Peus took down the freshmen pair of Kavya Karra and Stephanie Yakoff from Harvard (6-3, 5-7, [10]-[6]).

“Another great day for the Bears at the Super Regional Championships,” said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. “In her singles quarterfinal match, Phoebe displayed great execution of her game plan, using variety, accuracy on her serves and smart net play to defeat an opponent from Penn. In doubles, Ali and Addie went down 1-4 pretty quickly, but bounced back with some tenacious and gritty play to pull out the set in a tiebreaker. They shored up their execution in the second set and played tactically sound doubles to close out the match. Phoebe and Lindsey came out really strong in the first set and a half against a talented Harvard team but when their opponents raised their level we did not respond in time and lost the second set. In the match tiebreaker, both Phoebe and Lindsey came out playing their signature doubles with great serving, returning and aggressive net play to decisively take the match. It was great to see them elevate their game in the most critical stage of the match.”

Peus takes on sixth seeded senior Neha Velaga from Princeton in the semis on Sunday. The winner of that match will qualify for the ITA Fall National Tournament. In doubles, Benedetto and Ahlstrom are set to face fourth seeded grad student Polina Kozyreva and senior Maria Ines Fonte from Syracuse. Hofflander and Peus go against third seeded freshman Isabella Chhiv and senior Maia Sung from Princeton.
