Mount Men’s Tennis Defeats Morgan State, 5-2, to Close Out Fall Schedule – Mount St. Mary’s University


Emmitsburg, Md. (October 22, 2023)—Mount St. Mary’s men’s tennis defeated Morgan State in a pair of matches at home today to close out the regular season.  The Mount earned a 5-2 win in the opening match before recording a 6-1 victory in the second.  The Mount’s win in the first game was the first career win for Mount St. Mary’s head coach Silvia Chinellato.

In the opening match, the Mount swept all three doubles matches to capture the doubles point.  Jarrett Karnibad and Filippos Zachiotis teamed for a 6-2 win over Rhaizon Rankins and Makkijha Brown at the No. 1 doubles position.  Elliot Stevens and Victor Mignot earned a 6-2 win over Niles Rachal and Parris at No. 2 doubles while Aaron Thompson and Luke Papayoanou posted a 6-2 win over Patterson and Singh at the No. 3 position.

In singles play, Zachiotis won in straight sets over Brown at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-5.  Karnibad was a 6-1, 7-5 victor at No. 4 singles over Patterson, Marcel Cronin cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Parriss at No. 5 singles and Andrew Allen won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles over Singh.  Rachal downed Stevens, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles while Mignot retired trailing 6-1, 4-3, against Rankins at No. 3 singles.

In the second match, the Mount took two of three doubles matches to take the doubles point.  Zachiotis and Karnibad swept Rachal and Harris, 6-0, at No. 2, while Stevens and Cronin were 6-4 winners at No. 3 doubles over Patterson and Singh.  Papayoanou and Thompson were downed, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles by Rankins and Brown.

In singles play, Thompson earned a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-4) win over Rankins at the No. 1 position.  Patterson defeated Cronin, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) at the No. 2 spot in the lineup with Stevens rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win over Parris at No. 3.  Akarsh Gaonkar won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3, over Santos, Allen was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 5 over Muhammed and Karnibad swept Singh, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

The match concludes the fall season for the Mountaineers.
